Although more prevalent along the East Coast, coastal forts stretch from Maine to Florida, along the Gulf of Mexico, and on the Pacific coast. These forts are relics of an earlier age, and were built to protect important ports and waterways.
Many of these forts are now maintained as national landmarks. However, many of the forts are also in various states of disrepair. Some date back to the early nineteenth century, and centuries of exposure to the marine environment has caused decay. Although often seemingly dark and foreboding, the interiors of these forts are filled with contracts of light and shadow, and the intersection of many geometric shapes.
